Who We Are – What We Do

Caring about others, particularly our youth, is not controversial or complex. It’s simple and it’s what we do.

We are after school programs, youth counseling services, programs for pregnant teenagers, gang prevention programs, programs for runaway youth, youth employment services, juvenile justice services, hotline services for youth contemplating suicide, mentoring services and much more.

We are thirty-seven programs throughout Nassau County funded through the Nassau County Office of Youth Services.

'Making Youth Services a Pawn in County Politics'

Cutting programs, threatening to eliminate programs, delayed payments, slow processing of claims and contracts, all characterize Nassau County’s relationship with funded youth programs. And despite every effort of youth programs to urge Nassau County to conduct itself in a more responsible manner, it doesn’t happen.

The dictionary defines a pawn as somebody or something that is being used for the advantage of another person or organization, somebody who is held as security, usually as a hostage.

Red Light Cameras and Nassau County Youth Programs

In 2009, Nassau County recognized that the constant threats to the funding of County youth programs could not continue. The then County Executive, together with the County Legislature, drafted, proposed and approved (18-0 in the Legislature) Local Law No. 12 – 2009, to stabilize the funding of County youth programs.

The law provides funding for contracts with the County Youth Board (as well as the Office for the Aging, Veterans Service Agency and the Department of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disabilities Services) through the establishment of a fund to include revenues from a “red light camera program”.

Save Youth Programs - What You Can Do
The Impending Closing of County Youth Programs

Nassau County is closing virtually all County funded youth programs due to the inability of County officials to agree on issues regarding youth program funding and other more general County fiscal matters.

The County has notified youth programs that their funding is ending effective July 6, 2012. The County Office of Youth Services, will be decimated with 11 of the 15 staff positions being eliminated. Despite the fact that funding is already in place to fund these programs, the County has chosen to apparently break the law, and defund these programs because of political feuding of elected officials.

This irresponsible decision must be reversed. The County network of youth services has come together to fight for the preservation of programs that serve over 35,000 people annually.

This purpose of this web site is to explain the issues involved in this matter and to encourage the public to help “save youth programs”. We must let our elected officials, from both political parties, know that these actions will not be tolerated. Tell Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, the County Legislature’s leadership, and your County Legislator, to stop the disgraceful politics as usual and to re-instate the funding of County youth programs.

That’s What We Do

The Muslim holy book the Quran, says “if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind.”

A popular saying from the Talmud, a collection of Jewish law and tradition is “To save one life, it is as if you had saved the world”.

That’s what we do.

But the Talmud also says, “Whoever destroys a single life is as guilty as though he had destroyed the entire world”.

Is that what Nassau County is doing?
